We wanted to start converting classic art into metal works of art, so we started with the “Girl with a Pearl Earring” — a famous oil painting by Johannes Vermeer. It was painted around 1665 and has hung in The Hague since 1902. The painting was chosen as the most beautiful painting in the Netherlands. Now, you can own our rendition of it made out of heavy-duty steel.
As shown, it is 17.5″ tall — just like the original painting, but we can make a larger custom size if you like. We have shown it in a window, which really makes it come to life as light shows through it We also show it on the wall from several different angles as the light accents different aspects. We also show it next an earlier version which is painted in seaside blue. We can paint it any color you like, or leave it raw steel – – just let us know.
This artwork looks great inside or out. Because it’s made from 1/8″ thick structural steel plate, it is built to last and withstand the elements.
Leave it bare, paint it yourself, or have us paint it for you. Just let us know! This listing is for one metal version in the color of your choice (not the original painting!)
***Please note that steel in its natural state has blemishes in it. In our picture it is in its natural state. If you go with natural metal or a “Sealed” or “Clear” option, the blemishes will show. If you do not want to see them, just pick out a paint color or paint them yourself. 🙂 Also, note that the sealed option (which makes it a darker steel color) takes a full 24 hours to cure, so it adds one day to the ship time.
Does Thickness Matter? YES! But it can be confusing because a lot of ads say “heavy duty,” “thick,” or “very durable,” but those are just words. Some ads will tell you it is a particular gauge, but if you are like us, these approaches make us feel like a goat looking at a watch – – pretty confused! So, in this listing we use 1/8″ thick metal. Let’s put that in a list of thicknesses using common coins:
1/8″ = .125″ = 11 Gauge = Thicker than a Quarter and a Dime Stacked on Top of Each Other (2.4% Thicker). It is 250% thicker than 18 Gauge and 60% thicker than 14 Gauge.
5/64″ = .078″ = 14 Gauge = Barely Thicker than a Nickel (1.6% thicker).
1/20″ = .05″ = 18 Gauge = Almost as Thick as a Dime (it is 6% short)
